This blog will guide you on how to enable remote access on Huawei ONT.

Before sharing the process, let's recall how we normally log in to an ONT or router.

Above figure shows the common login way of all CPE. The device vendor presets a login address for the device management interface such as 192.168.10.1, 192.168.1.1. We just log in to the device by accessing the IP address through the PC browser. This may be the safest way, but it makes it inconvenient for us to manage our devices because of location changes.

So, we'd like to share with you how to enable SSH/telnet to access Huawei ONT through the ONT WebUI.

When you remotely access ONT, you need to determine whether we and the ONT are located on the same LAN according to the network location. The ONT configuration varies according to the network location.

How to enable Huawei ONT LAN-side remote access

Before access to the ONT using Telnet or SSH, you need to log in to the ONT WebUI using the method shown in the first picture in this post.
Click Advanced > Security tab, and enable Precise Device Access Control in the navigation tree on the left. Click New.

For details configuration, you can refer to the following figure.

Note: This operation needs to be performed using the administrator account.
Note: You can run the ping command to test whether the PC is connected to the ONT. You can run the Telnet command only after the PC is connected to the ONT.

Steps on how to enable Huawei ONT WAN-side remote access.

Before access to the ONT using Telnet or SSH, you need to log in to the ONT WebUI using the method shown in the first picture in this post.
Click Advanced > Security tab, and enable Precise Device Access Control in the navigation tree on the left. Click New.

For details configuration, you can refer to the following figure.

Note: This operation needs to be performed using the administrator account.
Remotely access the WAN IP address of the ONT from the WAN side. (Select the corresponding WAN IP address based on the WAN configuration selected on the configuration page.)

If access failed, it may be because the firewall is blocking access.

In addition, it is important to note that Huawei does not recommend users to access ONTs through WAN tests, which causes network security risks.

If you need to access the ONT on the WAN side, disable the function immediately after using the function.
